Air Cabin Crew: CareerThe job roleDuring either long-haul or short-haul flights, the safety and well-being of passengers is in the hands of the Air Cabin Crew. Prior to embarkation, they check the cabin to ensure that it is clean and well presented and they are also responsible for maintaining safety equipment on board. Once they have coordinated the seating of passengers, the Air Cabin Crew will deliver the safety presentation before ensuring that the flight is prepared for take-off. During the flight, Air Cabin Crew serve food and drink to passengers, respond to any incidents that occur and also sell duty-free products. Reports are then completed containing information on any situations that may have arisen. Relevant qualificationsEntry-level roles are possible with basic qualifications at secondary school level although it is such a desirable industry that all vacancies are hotly contested and the better the qualifications, the better the chances of employment. All successful candidates will undergo a comprehensive training course and must regularly update their knowledge of safety and emergency procedures. Skills requirementsSome airlines will require knowledge of a foreign language and most consider personal appearance to be important. Air Cabin Crew should be reasonably fit and able to swim but, above all, should have a lively and confident personality, essential when communicating with passengers and colleagues. Air Cabin Crew must be level-headed as it is an essential part of their job to calm and reassure passengers in the event of an emergency situation. Also, they should be able to deal with passengers who become intoxicated or aggressive. Career developmentAdvancement is limited to reaching a supervisory position, or Purser, although it is possible to obtain a transfer to a land-based role. The leading airlines recruiting in the UK include Virgin, easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways and they all offer the opportunity to visit new and exciting destinations. |
