A Career as an ArchitectThe job roleArchitects work in close conjunction with their clients to design and manage building projects in accordance with their budgets and requirements. They drive the design process and liaise extensively with contractors on site to ensure that projects are on schedule and in line with health, safety and environmental regulations. Whether working on new-build or restoration projects, Architects are responsible for ensuring that projects adhere to building and planning laws and that design drawings are complied with. Relevant qualificationsThe Architects Registration Board (ARB) requires candidates to complete a degree and professional training and pass the Professional Practice Examination before acceptance onto the UK Register of Architects. Membership of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is then required in order to practise as an Architect. Skills requirementsArchitects must be proficient in the use of computerised design applications and should have a keen eye for detail when analysing figures, technical data and measurements. Creativity is an essential quality but Architects should also appreciate that their designs should complement the surrounding area. Realistically, however, no design can meet with unanimous approval so Architects should be prepared to face criticism of their work. Communication skills are important as Architects have to liaise directly with their clients as well as with contractors and planners. Career developmentThe majority of Architects are employed by a private firm with some opting to set up their own practice and others operating on a contract basis. The most innovative Architects are those most likely to progress to senior level or be selected to work on high-profile projects. Some of the larger London-based practices, such as Grimshaw, have offices worldwide, offering Architects the opportunity for roles overseas where knowledge of international planning and building laws will be required. |
