A Career as an Immigration OfficerThe job roleAn Immigration Officer helps to control access to the UK via airports, ports and the Channel Tunnel by checking and endorsing passports and ensuring that all non-British visitors have a valid reason and the required documentation for entry into the country. They have the authority to detain and interview those suspected of attempting to enter the country under false pretences, and to arrange for their transportation home if necessary. Immigration Officers may become involved in investigations in conjunction with other authorities involving surveillance of those whose right to live in the UK has expired. Relevant qualificationsApplications are welcome from those with a strong academic background at secondary school level, and the subsequent application process also includes a written selection test. Immigration Officers must be UK nationals and should also pass medical and health examinations. Once accepted, Immigration Officers will face a rigorous training programme and must be seen to update their knowledge regularly throughout their career. Skills requirementsIt is useful, although not necessarily essential, to have knowledge of foreign languages, particularly those spoken by the minority groups frequently seen to be seeking asylum. However, it is imperative to be able to communicate effectively with people from a diverse range of backgrounds, both social and cultural, and to be able to respond appropriately to those who have a genuine right for asylum and who may have risked everything in their bid to arrive in the UK. Those who do not have the authority to enter the country may pose a significant threat to the Immigration Officers so it is important to be able to remain calm when faced with such situations. Career developmentThe Immigration Service has had to expand considerably in the face of increased global conflict and the subsequent rise in the number of asylum seekers trying to reach the UK. Senior roles are available, based on experience, including Chief Immigration Officer and Higher Executive Officer. |
