A Career as a Marketing ExecutiveThe job roleMarketing Executives are responsible for developing and implementing campaigns designed to enhance brand awareness and promote products and services on behalf of their clients. This requires them to demonstrate excellent industry and market knowledge and to develop strong relationships with their clients to ensure understanding and fulfilment of their requirements. The strategies that Marketing Executives develop incorporate a wide range of techniques and initiatives, such as press releases and advertising campaigns, which are targeted specifically at the relevant audience. Relevant qualificationsEven entry-level positions as a Marketing Executive require qualification to HND or degree level in subjects such as Business or Marketing although the Introductory Certificate in Marketing is an alternative entry route offered to non-graduates by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). There is also the Diploma in Marketing Communications which is available through the Communication, Advertising and Marketing Foundation (CAM). Skills requirementsArguably the most important trait for a Marketing Executive is the ability to communicate effectively not only with their clients but also with other members of a campaign team and a wider network of contacts. They should possess a creative and innovative approach to ensure the effectiveness of their campaigns. During the management of campaigns, Marketing Executives often have to work long hours and may need to travel extensively to attend product launches or other events. They should also be capable of responding to market and industry developments or competitor activities. Career developmentOrganisations across most industry sectors will employ Marketing Executives to promote their products and services. Senior roles include Marketing Manager or Director where increased responsibilities include managing more high-profile product launches and developing comprehensive marketing plans. With the increased sale of UK products to overseas markets, those with knowledge of foreign languages can achieve promotion to an export marketing role. Marketing Executives with a proven track record in campaign management can also establish a successful career working on a consultancy basis. Whether employed or self-employed, the job role is often highly pressurised and competitive, and progression will be enjoyed by those demonstrating a particularly innovative flair. |
