The job role
A wide range of industry sectors employ Purchasing Managers to source and purchase products and services required by the business that are both high in quality and low in cost. To achieve this, they manage mutually beneficial relationships with suppliers and conduct negotiations with them to ensure that they get the best possible deal. They may also need to find suitable new suppliers requiring them to call upon their network of contacts within the industry.
Relevant qualifications
A solid academic background is required for the role of Purchasing Manager although knowledge of the industry and the company is even more important. There are degrees and postgraduate qualifications available in Purchasing and Supply Chain Management as well as NVQs up to Level IV. Professional Certificates and Diplomas are also available through the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), completion of which can lead to formal accreditation.
Skills requirements
Industry expertise is essential for a Purchasing Manager as is the ability to communicate and negotiate effectively in order to secure the most cost-effective contracts in accordance with agreed budgets. Within larger companies, a Purchasing Manager may lead a team of staff with responsibility for ensuring they fulfil their job roles and meet required objectives.
Career development
Purchasing Managers can be employed in a variety of industries, such as production or engineering, as well as in the public sector, and there are relevant qualifications which are recognised throughout Europe. It is possible to gain promotion to senior management or director level and, depending on the company, Purchasing Managers can be accountable for managing a large team.
