A Career as a Warehouse ManagerThe job roleWarehouse Managers can be employed in a variety of industries and are responsible for receiving, storing and despatching goods in accordance with company and customer requirements. A variety of machinery can be used to load and unload delivery vehicles and to pick and pack goods, and the Warehouse Manager is responsible for ensuring that these are operated in accordance with health and safety regulations. A Warehouse Manager may be required to liaise with other internal departments to ensure that the warehouse is operated in line with overall business objectives. They are responsible for carrying out administrative duties associated with the role, including updating computerised stock control systems and completing delivery documentation. They also undertake general management duties including recruitment, performance management and training of their team. Relevant qualificationsThe position of Warehouse Manager is usually obtained through promotion from more junior roles, which can be facilitated by the achievement of NVQs in Distribution, Warehousing or Storage Operations. Degrees are also available in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Further professional qualifications are available through the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). Skills requirementsOn a daily basis, Warehouse Managers coordinate the movement of stock and are therefore required to be extremely well organised. They should be IT literate, capable of resolving problems and willing to working shifts to ensure optimum efficiency and productivity. Career developmentOpportunities for Warehouse Managers are available in various industry sectors and salaries are often good, particularly when bonuses are paid for the risk of handling potentially hazardous goods. There is also the option of achieving an overseas position through accreditation with the European Certification Board for Logistics (ECBL). |
