Improving Job Satisfaction

While having a potentially dramatic impact on your job performance, being unhappy at work can also have a negative effect on your home life. Considering that you spend a significant amount of your time at work, it is important that you get at least some enjoyment out of your job.

Why are you unhappy?

Before you can take positive action to improve your job satisfaction, it is important to have a clear understanding of exactly what aspects of your role you are unhappy with. It could be that you are not feeling challenged enough, that you have not achieved the recognition you feel you deserve or that there is some tension amongst your colleagues which is causing general unease. Alternatively, it could even be something in your personal life which is having an impact on your work life.

How to make positive changes

There are a number of ways to deal with a job that is making you unhappy and these should be considered before taking any drastic action such as handing in your notice!  By approaching your manager or supervisor, you may find that there are opportunities available to take on greater responsibility or undertake a new challenge. You could also create a personal development plan which would help towards the fulfilment of your career objectives. By undertaking further training, you could either enhance existing skills or learn new ones in order to facilitate your development.

If the reason for your dissatisfaction is someone you work with, you could try addressing this matter directly with them or discussing it with your manager to see if a resolution can be reached.

It is possible that expanding your network of contacts within the workplace could help make the working environment more enjoyable not just for you but also for your colleagues. You could consider organising team-building events or just informal social occasions that are aimed at developing rapport and encouraging discussion about issues within the workplace.

Achieving a healthy work-life balance is important and is discussed in more detail in another article on this site. However, in brief, you could discuss with your manager how your rota could be improved to enable you to spend more time at home or how changes could be made to your workload to ensure that your set objectives are more realistic.

Making the ultimate change

No matter how hard you try, it is sometimes a simple fact that a particular job is not for you!  If this is the case, then it probably is the right time to start looking for another job after all. However, be careful not to move to a similar role where you may experience the same sense of dissatisfaction.
